Middle School Bands (6th grade, 7th & 8th grade)
Students come into middle school with a very basic knowledge of instrument assembly, correct holding positions, basic tone production, and the beginnings of reading music. Middle school concert band is where they develop those skills and learn to shine! There are two concerts: one in December and one in April. Concert band meets daily in the band room.
Middle school is also the first time that students start to earn grades for band. Grades are determined by a combination of skills and activities: being prepared, taking an active part in classroom lessons, periodic playing checks, worksheets/quizzes on music theory & vocabulary, and performances. Students are expected to show a positive attitude and musical growth throughout the school year.
High School Band(s)
The Nelsonville-York High School band is made up of students from grades 9-12. Here, students improve playing skills so they can successfully perform bigger (and more advanced) pieces of music. While most continue to hone skills on their current instrument, others find opportunities to branch out to more advanced instruments such as tuba, tenor and baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, as well as incorporating a greater variety of percussion sounds.
Through musical and personal growth, these kids have fun and get the chances to be greater musicians. Along with in-class opportunities, students can continue to push their abilities through activities such as honor band auditions, community and university outreach programs, solo & ensemble, group competitions, all-county jazz band, and more!
We strive to prepare students for success beyond high school so they can enjoy music for a lifetime. Successful alumni have gone on to play as students at Ohio University, The Ohio State University, Toledo, Marietta, Bowling Green, and beyond. As members of those college bands, they have traveled and represented our hometown in performances such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the Rose Bowl Parade in California.
